Rohit Sharma: 'I have no plans to retire from ODIs' - vows to continue playing for India after Champions Trophy victory

Rohit made it clear that he has no plans to retire from this format. He wanted to ensure that no rumors were spread in the future. Thank you so much.

The decision isn't exactly a shocker. Despite rumours circulating that March 9, 2025 was Rohit's last as an active Indian cricketer, retirement is still some time away for the 38-year-old. Speculations about his future first emerged during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, when Rohit dropped himself from the Playing XI ahead of the Sydney Test. It was reported that Rohit's retirement is only a matter of time as early as the end of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. Still, here we are… three months later, with Rohit showing his eagerness to carry on.

At one point during the PC, Rohit was asked what the future holds for him, to which he responded. It was assumed to be a tight-lipped reaction to the 'R' word. But after some ten minutes, Rohit cleared the air once and for all.
"Abhi dekhte hai (Let's see). Winning two ICC trophies is a big achievement. Going undefeated is icing on the cake. I have seen very few teams who have won two tournaments undefeated. It was important for us to come here and prepare well. We utilised the conditions well. There are no future plans. What is going on currently will continue to go on ahead."
What next for Rohit SharmaWhile Rohit has vowed to continue playing ODIs, whether he is up and running for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa remains to be seen. Rohit, the captain, has achieved what only MS Dhoni had before him – win multiple ICC titles. In fact, he has outpaced Dhoni, leading India to a T20 World Cup win and the Champions Trophy in a span of just nine months. Had it not been for Australia spoiling India's party on the night of November 19, Rohit would have won all three major ICC titles in less than two years.
What does need serious consideration is India's change in guard. While Rohit can play as long as he wants to, scoring important runs - he showed it in the final, playing a game-changing knock of 76 and providing India with a rollicking start in their chase of 252, he could, at the appropriate time, decide to step down as India's captain and hand the command of the team to his current deputy Shubman Gill. If at all Rohit plays in the 2027 World Cup two years from now, by the time he will turn 40, it is unlikely that he will go to South Africa as India's captain.
